Having trouble getting my Lexmark Z55 to work on the print server.

Router is setup fine for comms-both Ethernet and wirless working fine.
Using XP Pro.

Now to the printer-I previously used the printer on the client PC via USB-so all drivers etc are already installed. Simply looking to add the IP port. So, I have connected printer to the USB port on gateway and both are on. Go to Section 4.2.2 of the manual and add “Standard TCP/IP Port”. Enter 192.168.1.253 and click next. It now seems to take some time until I eventually get a screen which says…

The detected device is of unknown type. Be sure that:
1. Device is properly configured
2. Address on the previous page is correct.

Generic Network Card is highlighted. I then selected “Lexmark External Print Server (1 port)” from the drop down and then Next. (Seems like a good guess)

I then configured the IP port as per the manual … ie. Selected LPR and eneterd lpd as the Queue Name.

To test it I opened a document, selected the printer and hit print.

The document added to the queue OK, but nothing printed. After about 30 seconds I got a dialogue saying “Communication Not Available - The printer cannot connect with the computer”

I checked that the printer was in “online” mode.

Any clues?

Can you try with the printers bi-directional support disabled.

It could also be that the printer requires the software on the PC to function which is an issue for some HP printers. Unfortunally we are still working on this if this is the issue.

Sorry - I has already tried that but didn't mention it

I have tried it with bidirectional support both enabled and disabled – no difference.

Also just so you know - have downloaded the latest firmware (C1.0.6.7 ETS[Sep 22 2004]) and installed incl factory reset.

Since my help had dried up, I have continued to search and it looks like I may have a solution. Seems the Lexmark Z55 (and probably other drivers also) has an option where you can “dumb down” the driver.

In the printer properties, in addition to disabling bi-directional support (Ports Tab), I went to the Advanced Tab and cleared the “Enable Advanced Printing Features” box. I also changed the options under the Print Processor Button I selected the Winprint / Raw option. Now I get standard windows progress dialogues as opposed to the fancy Lexmark ones – but who cares, the printer works.

It maybe that I didn’t need to do all of the above … one or a combination may have given a successful result, but I ain’t touching anything now. It works!

ooook

RAW is not supposed to be supported yet so I am going to kick someone's **** if it is and they have not told us.

I will investigate this further and thanks for having a go a bit further.
