Hi everyone,
Details are starting to come in. Please note the disclaimer below
----- ALL DETAILS, SPECS AND DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE -----
The replacement unit will be a 802.11g/b access point/router which carries a large majority of the MNWAPB's functionality plus alot more. Detachable antenna and the ability to drop it into 802.11b-only mode should keep most people happy as far as the common-use of the MNWAPB's at the moment as "up the mast" bridges. The size of the unit is only slightly larger than the MNWAPB (mayby 1-2cm square larger).
Current ETA is along end March, early April (subject to change).
If people have more questions I may be able to assist.
Regards,
Serial.

Hi Serial,
I would be interested in knowing what the chip will be.
Is it going to be another Realtek SoC like the RTL8185L? (Please, Please!!)
How about exposed PCI bus (Mini-PCI socket) and Serial console?
cheers,

At this stage it appears it will be based off a Ralink chipset running off a RISC processor.
There will be no serial port on the retail unit.

no words on RF power?
serialmonkey

Unsure on the power output at the moment. From what we have seen of the documentation it may be a touch less than the MNWAPB but not by much. This is still being looked at and tested.

Has it got Client Mode and Mac Cloning??
serialmonkey
Feb 15 2005, 03:49 PM
At this time it appears that the unit will not have the Client modes - but will have full bridge and WDS support so you will still be able to use it for backbone links if both ends support WDS.

What do you mean compatable ? Thats a very broad statement. The device will use 802.11g/b technologies and standard techs like WDS, so anything else that supports those specifications will be compatable. Client modes will not be implemented.
Configuration is using a web administration page just like the MNWAPB. These devices do not run Linux as their firmware - so unsure why you would care about the flash memory size.

No client mode is SO turning me off these units.. comes in handy for cheap CPE units

Why not just use WDS ?
S.
WDS = slow

and not really a CPE unit then is it

So I can WDS a MNWAPB with the new one...
So the old one DID run linux, and the new one DOESN'T run linux? So what does it run? a unique new operating system?
Flash memory size because I was wondering how upgradeable would they be.
I really want to know details about the price.. are these going to be affordable like the old ones?
serialmonkey

I have no information on the price at this time.
Yes, you can WDS between a MNWAPB and the new units.
It runs a proprietory non-Linux operating system - hence upgrading the memory is fairly pointless I believe unless someone can tell me otherwise :-)

We're really in need of 3 more Minitar AP's. What's the aprox timeframe we're looking at before it is in the resale?
Remco de Jong
system admin BCV Melbourne (student campus)
1 Chariot 1500/256 connection
1 Netgear DG834
4 Minitar WAP's
1 external antenna
16 stations
And all working fine!

The MNWAPB will never be for resale again, the MNWAPGR will be available soon though - hopefully once the specs are released it will suit your needs.

The Minitar MNWAPB had a great chance to cement itself in the market for a much longer life. It's a pity the Linux firmware wasn't released in full much earlier. The released firmware source appeared to be the very minimum. With the addition of more memory that was already supported by the PCB the functionality could have also been improved through open source revisions.
The WRT54G* is already proving this is a viable strategy.

the linksys units are to fussy and power hungry for me,
minitars was much better, no "bloat" lower poweruseage the radio was decent for the price, i am still saddend by discountinuded statement, [[ --- deleted by Serialmonkey, please do not discuss OEM style issues here --- ]]
