Full Version: Is my unit dead?
Minitar Forums > Discontinued Products > Minitar 802.11B MNWAPB Wireless Access Point Issues & Firmware
Nathan
Ok, here's the story - I was adding a new MAC address to the filter over the unit's ethernet connection via the web panel (i.e., I was accessing the web panel over a cable and not via wireless), and after adding the IP and saving it, the panel didn't load again, rather it produced IE's "failed to load" or whatever page. I unplugged it, left for a minute or two, plugged it back in again and it didn't pick up the unit at all now.

I used an IP scanner for all IP's on 192.168.0.x, 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x and it isn't picking the AP up. I figured this MAC address action somehow screwed the settings or something. So I decided to use the hardware reset button - i'm not sure if you're meant to do this when it is on or off (on makes sense but then again, you reset a PC's CMOS when it is off), so I first tried it when the unit was on - I held it for 30 seconds or so.

Nothing seemed to happen, there was no sign of a reset with the LED's, and it still wasn't accessing, so I tried it when it was off. This time the button seemed rigid and wouldn't you know it, this time around I physically scewed the button up; jammed it right into the unit, which soon after began to freely tumble around inside. I opened it up and disposed of it, and I now have a reset hole with no button, just an exposed lump of plastic which appears to have 3 connections on it, which I presume the button use to create a circut out of to perform the reset function (although it didn't work for me anyway seemingly).

When I turn it on, the power light comes on, and the LAN light comes on when a cable is present, but no WLAN activity is registered by the LED at all. 192.168.2.1 doesn't work (and yes i'm accessing it via a PC with the IP 192.168.2.3) and neither does the old IP I gave it, so I guess the reset never worked, and now I have a unit with no functioning reset button. Usually i'd just let it be and get a new one, but I see now these units are no longer for sale - which is a major bummer, as I use 2 in WDS to bridge 2 wired networks together, and since one Minitar still works fine, i'm not sure that if I find another brand WDS AP, i'd be able to mix them.

So, basically, can anyone tell me 1) if I can reset it some other way (like if I can short it somewhere or something) and 2) if worse comes to worse, can anyone recommend another unit which will work in WDS with a Minitar? It is somewhat urgent, i'd love to wait for the new minitar but unfortunately I need one ASAP - I mentioned 2 wired networks, well one happens to be a router, and now the other side can't get net access, not an ideal situation as you can see.

Thanks!

I think the best way to find out what is going on is to add a serial console.
It may be failing to load the OS or crapping out part way through.

Check the mod forum for SerialMonkey's excellent howto

Any unit that supports "WDS" should work fine with the MNWAPB - it's a defined standard.

But unfortunatly yes, it does sound like a dead unit.

Finally found a Minitar AP (all other shops were N/A/sold out) after a long search. And I found it basicaly at the end of the world: Tasmania, Hobart.

Yippie Hurray for that! But now...the device is defect. It won't reset either.
I hold the button in for longer than 4 secs and nothing happens. Tried everything like Nathan. But I didn't screw it open...

Is there anything I can do and if not. Do I have to send it back to Tasmania for repair or is there a workarround to send it somewhere else. I live in Melbourne.

melbourne isn't that far away from tasmania so you are near the edge of the world too tongue.gif

Try holding down the reset button, and WHILST holding it down, plug in the power cable. Keep it held down for 15 seconds, unplug it and plug it back in and see if it has reset.

It it hasn't, hold down the reset button while it is on, for 10 seconds, and release it and then the lan light should go off (if it was on) and then back on. Unplug the unit and plug it back in.

If I do BOTH of these steps, I'm guaranteed to have it reset. Just make sure it is 10 seconds or longer to be on the safe side!

I did it exactly the way you decribed it but the device is not showing any reaction.
The power led just keeps on whatever I do.

Also after the worksequence you gave me I am still not able to connect to the webinterface.

Any other suggestions?
