I have set up some wireless links using the minitar 802.11b minitar access points and have been very pleased with the results including on 18km link. On a couple of occasions when we have had problems on the network, I have tried to use the "site survey" function to get an idea of the link quality, but the signal value just seems to jump from values between 1 and 100 with very little obvious correlation to the expected signal strength. It would be great if this could give a usefull value. Also if an equivalent function could be provided when in AP mode so as to be able to detemine the quality of the recieved signal at the otheer end of the link.

We will mention it to the OEM to see if they can give us information behind the data presented in the site survey.

This has been the case with the miniatrs for as long as I can remember.

I suspect it has a lot to do with the linux based kernel, as I have only every seen iwconfig under linux give an accurate signal strength when running in infrastructure mode.

Yeah i have noticed the same problem too. Would be nice if they could get if fixed.

Well if this is the case then there may not be much the OEM can do. They have been informed though.

At least one other RTL8181 based AP exibits the same behaviour with "Site Survey". This seems to be a problem with Realtek driver. The vendor told me they'll look into it, but I guess I'll have to chase them again and again.
